Just a little reminder for the 2011/12 tax year, anyone who wants to file their Self Assessment tax return on paper should do so by 31 October 2012, or face an automatic £100 penalty.
If, however, you have been sent a notice to complete a tax return after 31 July 2012 then your completed paper return must be sent back no later than three months following the date of issue of the notice.
HMRC will calculate the tax if the return is received by the appropriate deadline. Anyone who is still submitting paper returns might want to have a look at submitting their returns online, it’s quick, easy and you have an extra three months to do it (31st January 2013)
Online filing has other advantages too because the tax is calculated automatically, you get an immediate online acknowledgement once you’ve filed and it’s processed faster, so any money owed is repaid more quickly.
Registering for online filing is simple – visit the HMRC website at hmrc.gov.uk/sa and click on “Sign up for Self Assessment Online”.
